In our office, we have made an educated decision not to place amalgam fillings. There are a lot of concerns regarding the presence of mercury in these fillings, and the effects it may have both on our health and the environment.
Although we do not place this type of filling, we do not believe that all amalgam fillings need to be replaced. We will treat these filling the same as all other restorations and replace them only as necessary or on request by our clients.
We believe that a properly-placed white (composite) filling is esthetically superior and will last as long an amalgam in the same location.
In regards to the environment, we ensure that all amalgam waste is separated and disposed of properly from our outgoing water supply.
